BACKGROUND
Nile Dialogue Platform, is an NGO dedicated to contributing to peace and advancing social cohesion through providing dialogue platforms for sharing, connecting different communities to understand each other and live in harmony.
In the recent years, Uganda has been hit with a wave of violent extremism: In the November of 2016, Uganda witnessed a blood bath of over 100 people, stemming from a cultural insurgency backed by radicalism, xenophobia and separatist notions. In 2011, the El-Shahab, a Somali extremist jihadi group, planted 3 bombs in 3 locations leading to the death of over 126 innocent lives. Following the recent murder of Muslim clerics, the police has reported that the extremists are wooing and recruiting youths to join rebel movements through secret meetings, circulating hate speech on social media and other platforms and secret recruitments.
Uganda which is home to many religious sects, cultures and many unemployed youths is at a blink of violence and extremists are indoctrinating the masses with notions of violence. Dialogue as one of the many solutions is a powerful tool to achieve peace and should not be underestimated in counting violent extremism
In the line of promoting peace, reaching out to the wider public is of paramount importance. This cannot be achieved with a handful of people, but we need to engage as many people as possible to gain large impact in order to achieve lasting peace.
In this training branded “The Dialogue approach to rooting out Violent Extremism”, NDP seeks to train people who can reach out to others with the message of non-violent means of solving discrepancies and tackling the vice of violent extremism. The trainees can reach out to others in many different avenues; through their work, volunteering, training others, sensitizing or even social media and other platforms.
